FT7 Vs. FT40 Polar Heart Rate Monitor Watch

The FT7 and FT40 are fitness heart rate monitors made by Polar. These two monitors have many of the same features with only a few differences. The FT40 is the higher-end model and includes a handful of training features that the FT7 lacks. Both models have basic watch and heart rate monitoring functions.


The FT7 is available in four styles, with each model having a two-tone color band. The FT40 is only available in black and white, but does have two size options. The FT40 has a larger and heavier wrist monitor than the FT7. The lightest FT40 weighs 61 g; the lightest FT7 weighs 30 g. Both monitors come with the Polar WearLink+ chest strap, which features a coded transmitter that eliminates interference and cross talk.

Watch Features

The FT7 and the FT40 have the same watch features. Both models are water-resistant up to 30 m, or 98 feet. The screen displays the time, date and day of the week and has a backlight for night viewing. The FT7 and the FT40 are able to show the time in either 12- or 24-hour format and can track the time in two time zones. The batteries in the wrist monitors are user replaceable, which means you don't have to send the unit in to change the battery.

Training Features

The FT40 heart rate monitor has more training features than the FT7. Both models have a graphical target zone indicator that visually shows you what training zone you are in and they have touch free functionality. The FT40 has two features that the FT7 lacks: ZoneLock and ZonePointer. ZoneLock allows you to lock a training zone; the monitor audibly alerts you if you go above or below that heart rate zone. ZonePointer is a moving symbol on the screen that indicates whether you are in your target heart rate zone.

Other Features

The FT7 and the FT40 calculate the number of calories you burn during a training session. They also tell you whether the main result of your training is fitness improvement or fat burning. The FT40 includes the Polar fitness test, which measures your VO2 max, or maximal oxygen uptake, an indicator of your current fitness level.
