The Lollipop Weight Loss Plan

By Jim Thomas ; Updated July 18, 2017

There are all sorts of diets that promise to help you shed lots of pounds almost overnight. But there are few diets that recommend eating candy to lose weight. One of the latest is the Lollipop Diet, which has been popularized by Power Pops -- lollipops and suckers from a Canadian company that have been talked up on American TV shows such as "Extra."

Claims

Power-Pops, a product from the Fun Unlimited company in Canada, claims that its suckers have the power to suppress your appetite and also to give you a burst of energy. It also claims not to use caffeine or any kind of stimulants. You are supposed to take a Power-Pop before breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ingredients

According to the Obesity Panacea website, there are three potential weigh-loss ingredients in Power-Pops. One is hoodia, an herb from South Africa that is said to be an appetite suppressant. A second is Citrimax, also known as HCA, which is derived from the garcinia camboya plant. The third is guarana, which is a natural source of caffeine.

Research

Research does not support the appetite suppression and weight-loss claims for hoodia and Citrimax. Obesity Panacea states that the Mayo Clinic found no conclusive evidence that hoodia is effective as an appetite suppressant. The site also discusses a study from Columbia University that was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study found that a control group lost the same amount of weight as a group that took Citrimax. Finally, it is not clear whether Power-Pops even contain guarana, since the company website claims it doesn't use any ingredients with caffeine or other stimulants, yet guarana is a caffeine product.

Effectiveness

Obesity Panacea listed Power-Pops as one of its Top 10 diet scams of 2009. Ironically, its diet might actually work, since the company says you should eat healthy meals with fresh fruit, vegetables, complex carbohydrates and proteins. That alone may cause you to lose weight. But it probably won't be because of the Power-Pops.
