How to Buy a Good Bathroom Scale

By Lillian Downey ; Updated July 18, 2017

You might think a scale is a scale, only to find yourself bombarded with options when you get to the store. Scales have come a long way from the days of spinning dials. They have sophisticated LCD screens and can provide information on your entire body composition as opposed to just your weight. Set a budget, then explore all your feature options before you determine which bathroom scale is best for you and your family.

  1. Determine who in your family will be using the scale and estimate their weights. Different scales have different max weights, so look for a scale that will read accurately up to and several pounds beyond the weight of the heaviest member of your family.

  2. Determine if you want a digital or an analog scale. If you're choosing an analog scale, look for one that makes recalibrating or "zeroing out" the scale before each use easy and convenient. Look for numbers that are clear and easy to read and that also allow you to measure ounces lost or gained.

  3. Look for digital scales that can also measure your body composition. Lower level digital scales can offer your weight and body fat percentage while more advanced models can tell you changes in your water weight and muscle composition as well.

  4. Look for scales that record your body changes, if that's important to you. Some scales can be programmed for different family members and can store each member's records. Then, with a push of a button, you can see your current numbers and how they stack up against past numbers. This saves you from having to chart your losses or gains somewhere else.

  5. Choose the scale with the best warranty or return policy so you can protect your investment if something malfunctions. This allows you to test your scale out at home and see if it feels sturdy and meets your expectations.
