Levaquin 500 mg Side Effects
Levofloxacin is the generic name of Levaquin, a prescription medication used in the treatment of many bacteriological infections. It is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, according to the Mayo Clinic, that both kills bacteria and prevents bacterial growth. It may be used to fight anthrax. Levaquin is administered as a solution or as a pill.

Rare Serious Side Effects
Levaquin 500-mg tablets may produce rare serious side effects in some people. Not everyone will experience these, and many people will experience no side effects. Your doctor needs to know immediately, however, if you do experience these serious side effects. They may include bodily trembling, severe cramps or pain in the stomach, tenderness in the abdomen, a rash on the skin, mental agitation, itching, blisters on the skin, skin redness, mental confusion or a burning sensation on the skin. Others include severe diarrhea that may include blood; skin swelling or redness; a fever; psychosis; sensory, auditory or visual hallucinations; and inflammation, pain or swelling in the hands, shoulders or legs.
Other Serious Side Effects
People who have taken Levaquin have experienced other serious side effects for which the occurrence incidence is not known. Consult your physician about any of these. They include wheezing while breathing; prolonged bleeding; unusual weakness in the feet, legs, hands or arms; discoloration of your urine; vocal alterations; breathing and swallowing problems; uncommon tiredness and weakness; liver failure; abnormal bleeding and bruising; heart failure; unsteadiness; failure of the lungs or kidneys and severe dizziness. Others may include chest tightness, tar-like stools, glandular swelling, gum bleeding, throat soreness, vision blurring, shortness of breath, unusual patterns of brain waves, drop in blood pressure that is sharp, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat) or arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), hoarseness or hives. There also is the potential of mental confusion and a coma.
Non-Serious Side Effects
Levaquin potentially can cause temporary side effects for which most people will not need medical aid because they are not serious. Call your doctor, however, if they persist. Less common non-serious side effects include vomiting, discomfort or pain in the abdomen, a discharge from and itching of the vagina, changes in the way food or drinks taste, insomnia, constipation, nervousness, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, light-headedness and headaches. Some others have been reported, including sweating; faint feelings; skin flushing, particularly on the neck and face; and a sensation of heat or warmth on the body.
