Suggestions for Probiotic Brands

By Sid Marks

Although there are many probiotic brands to choose from, they do not all meet the same quality standards. One of the most important qualities to look for is the strain or strains of good bacteria that are used in the product. Then there is the form of probiotic you prefer, which can include drinks or smoothies, capsules, powders and tablets. Since most brands do not produce probiotics in all these forms, consumers will often choose two or more brands to meet the needs of their lifestyles.

Culterelle is a probiotic company that uses a particular strain of good bacteria called Lactobacillus GG. This bacteria is a product of over 25 years of research and is also one of the world's most studied. The ability to withstand the effects of strong acids in the stomach along with intestinal bile is what sets this strain apart from others. Culterelle produces four different products that are geared towards overall digestive health and a healthy immune system in the form of capsules. All except one are dairy-free. There is a version for children in powder form that can be mixed with a cool beverage.

Jarrow Formulas

Jarrow Formulas is a nutritional supplement company based out of Los Angeles. It produces probiotics as well as vitamins, herbal supplements, enzymes and amino acids. You can feel confident about the quality of their products because they monitor government regulations, involving nutritional products. It also promotes the rights of Americans to have access to high-quality nutritional supplements. Jarrow Formulas is involved with universities and research institutions around the world to insure the quality of their products. It also has a panel of doctors and scientists that perform regular clinical research. Jarrow probiotics are available in capsule, powder and chewable form.

Yakult is another company that backs its probiotic formula with sound science and research. Its probiotic beverage was created in Japan in 1935 and is now sold in over 30 countries, including the U.S. It has research institutions in Europe and Japan that study the possible applications of probiotics and intestinal bacteria. Yakult's probiotic beverage is citrus-based and contains their exclusive strain of good bacteria, called Lactobacillus casei Shirota. Yakult is good for men, women and children and is headquartered in Torrance, California.

Lifeway Foods is a company headquartered in Illinois. In 1986 it introduced its form of probiotic beverage, called kefir, to the U.S. Kefir is a dairy-based cultured beverage that is believed to be more beneficial to the digestive tract than yogurt. Lifeway's kefir is available in whole milk, low-fat and organic versions and has multiple flavors to choose from. It also produces probiotic beverages specifically for children. What makes Lifeway Kefir so effective is its multiple strains of good bacteria. While most probiotics have just one strain, Lifeway Kefir has 12 different strains.
