Nerds Candy Nutrition
Nerds are a candy developed by Wonka, a division of Nestle. Described on the box as a tiny, tangy and crunchy candy, Nerds come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Original Nerds are sold in boxes, portioned from Halloween handout size to movie theater size. This popular candy is available at most grocery and convenience stores year round.
The serving size of original Nerds candy is one tablespoon or about 15 grams. The most common portions are between 15 grams for the Halloween handout size and 170 grams for the larger boxes. One serving of Nerds contains 60 calories. Nerds contain no fat or protein, indicating that their calorie count comes primarily from carbohydrates.
Mostly Made of Sugar
Nerds primarily consist of sugar. The top three ingredients are dextrose, sugar and malic acid. The rest of the candy contains less than 2 percent of corn syrup, artificial flavors, carnauba wax and artificial coloring. The artificial coloring varies by flavor.
Allergen and Food Sensitivity Information
As a warning to those with food sensitivities or allergies, Wonka notes that Nerds are made in a facility that also processes wheat and egg. Because original Nerds candy do not contain protein or artificial sweeteners, they are okay to be consumed by individuals with phenylketonuria or PKU.
Varieties of Nerds
Wonka has released several varieties of candies that incorporate the original Nerds candy. The Very Berry Nerds rope contains a gummy center with Nerds stuck on the outside. Wonka has also released Giant Chewy Nerds. Gimmicky Nerds products include Nerds scented nail polish, Nerds stuffed animals and the World’s Largest Box of Nerds Candy.
