Normal Weight for 14-Year-Olds

At 14 years old, your body is constantly changing, trading the features of childhood for those of adulthood. With changes in height and appearance come changes in weight. It can be difficult to decide what's an appropriate weight for you given the range of body types among people your age. Height and gender are key factors to consider when determining how much you should weigh.


Body weight is about more than physical appearance. When a person is underweight, it can be an sign that his or her body is not absorbing nutrients properly. This may be due to a disease such as celiac disease or a behavior such as bulimia. Being overweight can be a sign of a problem, but it also leads to poor health. It can cause arthritis, diabetes, infertility, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other conditions.

Body Mass Index

Doctors around the world use the body mass index, or body mass indicator (BMI), to judge a patient's weight in relation to his height. When using pounds and inches, multiply your weight by 703 and divide the answer by the square of your height in inches. When using kilograms and meters, divide your weight by the square of your height in meters. A result between 18.5 and 24.9 indicates a normal weight.


Since the average 14-year-old male is between 5 feet 3 inches (63 inches) and 5 feet 6 inches (65 inches) tall, he should weigh between 104 and 154 lbs. At 63 inches you should weigh between 104 and 140 lbs.; at 64 inches you should weigh between 107 and 145 lbs.; at 65 inches you should weigh between 111 and 149 lbs.; and at 66 inches you should weigh between 114 and 154 lbs.


At 14 years old, the average girl may be as much as two inches shorter than her male counterpart. This means that she is likely between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 4 inches, or between 63 and 64 inches tall. If you're 63 inches tall, a normal weight for you is between 104 and 140 lbs. If you're 64 inches tall, a normal weight is between 107 and 145 lbs.


The body mass index doesn't provide a thorough assessment of a person's body weight, primarily because it provides no insight to the composition of the weight. Therefore, a 14-year-old with a BMI in the normal range may be carrying more fat than doctors consider healthy. A 14-year-old's BMI may be in the unhealthy range because he or she is muscular due to athletics.
