How to Make a Nebulizer
If you have breathing difficulties, such as asthma or bronchitis, you may find it necessary to use a nebulizer. There are several of these on the market that you can purchase, but if you don't have a medical plan that covers such purchases, it may be far more cost effective to make your own. With the proper kit, you can make a nebulizer that is just as efficient as one purchased pre-made.
If you are experiencing serious medical symptoms, seek emergency treatment immediately.
Check for kit instructions, and that all of the components are there. You will find that there are not too many components to have to deal with 1. First there will be the mouthpiece. The size of the mouthpiece will depend on the kit size you purchased, whether it is for a child or adult. The mouthpiece may also be in the form of a mask. In addition to this, there should be a connector for the mouthpiece as well. There will also be a medication chamber. This is the unit that will hold the prescribed medication. Some kits come with an air reservoir that is not always a necessity. Finally there is the tubing that will be connected to the air source.

Test the air/oxygen supply. Attach one end of the air/oxygen hose to the machine and turn it on. You should be able to feel the air come through the hose. This will confirm that the machine part of the unit is working correctly and that the hose is clear.
Hook the hose into the medication chamber. Insert the other end of the hose into the chamber that is going to hold the medication. Make sure the hose is connected firmly so that none of the medication can leak from the chamber.

Add the prescribed medication. The instructions that came with the medication should clearly tell you how much medication to add 1. Attach the connector to the mouthpiece, and the chamber will then couple up to the connector, which is now attached to the mask. If the type of kit you have been required to use consists of a mouthpiece, you may find that you have to make use of an oxygen reservoir as well. If this is the case, then there will be a port on the side of the connector to hook up the oxygen reservoir.
Turn on the machine and set the air level as prescribed by your doctor. If it is oxygen, it will have to be set at 6 liters to be released every minute.
Observe the unit to be sure that you can see a mist being released through the mask or mouthpiece. This is confirmation that the unit has been constructed correctly, and is working properly.
Place the mouthpiece in your mouth, or the mask over your mouth and nose, and breathe deeply and slowly. Continue this until there is no more mist being generated, or according to the instructions of your physician 1.
