What to Eat When You Have a Gallbladder Attack

The gallbladder is an organ that is just underneath the liver. It concentrates the bile that is made by the liver to digest fats. When you consume foods that are high in bad fats, the liver produces more bile in order to digest these fats. When the gallbladder gets overloaded with bile, this can inflame it, and give you a gallbladder attack with symptoms such as pain, gas, belching and heartburn.

B Vitamins and Iron

When suffering from gallbladder attacks it's important to eat foods that are high in B vitamins and iron. Two examples of such foods are whole grains and kale. Spinach is also high in iron, but it can exacerbate gallbladder attacks. So if you're suffering from a gallbladder attack you should avoid spinach.


Increasing fiber intake is important if you're suffering from gallbladder attacks because fiber helps to keep the bile produced by the liver from becoming too thick. It does this by decreasing the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines and decreasing cholesterol synthesis. Cholesterol is one of the main ingredients in bile, and when there is too much in the bile it can cause gallstones to be formed as well as gallbladder attacks.

Antioxidant Foods

Eating foods containing antioxidants such as cherries, blueberries, tomatoes, squash and bell peppers can help to both prevent and reduce the severity of gallbladder attacks. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals which are toxins that are produced by the body performing oxidation. These free radicals can actually cause inflammation, and since a gallbladder attack is due to inflammation of the gallbladder, it's important to eat foods that neutralize them to help reduce the number and severity of gallbladder attacks.


Drinking plenty of water helps to flush toxins from the body and can assist in relieving the symptoms of a gallbladder attack. The liver is having a difficult time breaking down all the cholesterol and other bad fats that have been consumed, thus causing a gallbladder attack. Drinking plenty of water and flushing out toxins can help keep the liver and gallbladder from being overloaded and give them time to break down the bad fats and reduce gallbladder symptoms.
