Does Eating Sour Green Apple Skins Help You Lose Weight?

By Jill Corleone, RDN, LD

Some preliminary research indicates that a compound in the skin of green apples may help you lose weight. Even so, while green apples make a good food choice on any weight-loss plan, don't count on them to magically melt the pounds away. Talk to your doctor before starting any weight-loss diet.

Green Apple Nutrition

Nutritionally, the sour green apple makes a good choice when trying to reduce calorie intake for weight loss. It's low in calories, high in fiber and fat-free. It's also a source of a number of essential nutrients, including vitamins A, C, E and K, a variety of B vitamins and potassium. One medium green apple, 3 inches in diameter, has 100 calories, 25 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of fiber. It also meets 14 percent of the daily value for vitamin C.

Green Apple Fat-Burner

In addition to being a low-cal food choice on your diet plan, the ursolic acid found in the skin of the green apple may help you lose weight. A 2011 study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food tested the effects of ursolic acid on fat and body weight in mice fed a high-fat diet. The study found that the mice given the ursolic acid lost more weight and fat than the control mice. While this sounds like the acid from the green apple skin may help you lose weight, human studies need to be conducted before claims can be made.

Green Apples and Weight Loss

Although it's unclear whether the acid in the skin of the sour apple can help you lose those unwanted pounds, including this kind of apple in your weight-loss plan is beneficial. The green apple is high in fiber, and getting more fiber in your diet may help you lose weight. Fiber is filling and takes your body longer to digest, helping you control hunger for longer periods of time. Additionally, as a crunchy food, the green apple, especially the skin, takes more time to eat, which may help slow you down so you eat less.

It All Counts

Green apples are low in calories and filling, but if you eat too many, you may not lose weight. When it comes to weight loss, calories count no matter what you eat. Decreasing your daily intake by 500 calories a day can help you lose 1 pound a week. Talk to your doctor to help you determine your weight-loss calorie needs.
