How Many Calories Will You Burn Doing Core Synergistics?

By Amanda Oliva ; Updated July 18, 2017

A calorie is a unit of energy that we mostly associate with food intake. The main energy sources for your body -- carbohydrates, fats and proteins -- are nutrients that contain calories. Energy from calories fuels your every action, from fidgeting to marathon running. The calories you burn in any given activity -- including P90X's Core Synergistics -- depends on a number of factors.

Calories Burned During Exercise

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says estimates for number of calories used during a physical activity are based on experiments that measure the amount of oxygen consumed during a specific exercise for a certain body weight. The amount of calories you burn depends on a number of factors: your weight, the specific activity, intensity level and the amount of muscle you have.

What is Core Synergistics?

Core Synergistics is the name of the eighth DVD in the P90X workout series, marketed by Beachbody as an extreme 90-day fitness program that combines cardio workouts, weight and resistance training, yoga, plyometrics and stretching routines to improve coordination, flexibility and strength. P90X developer Tony Horton describes Core Synergistics as a workout that recruits multiple muscle groups to build and support the core (lumbar spine and trunk muscles), while at the same time conditioning your body from head to toe.

Calories Burned With Core Synergistics

Because the Core Synergistics workout includes fast-paced abdominal floor work, numerous pushup variations and exercises using weights, it can be best categorized as circuit training. Circuit training is a series of strength or cardio exercises (or both) repeated two or three times with little or no rest between sets. This type of exercise with the addition of weights generally burns 756 calories per hour, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Comparable Calorie Burning Activities

If you are looking for a workout that burns calories comparable to Core Synergistics, explore circuit-training programs that incorporate weights in a fast-moving sequence with little rest in between. The President’s Council on Fitness and Sports provides a catalog of physical activities that burn more than 500 calories per hour. The list includes aerobic dancing, competitive racquetball, cross-country skiing, martial arts like kick-boxing and vigorous cycling.

The Department of Health and Human Services bases their calorie calculations on a person weighing 150 lbs. When performing the exercises featured in Core Synergistics, you may burn more or fewer than 756 calories, depending on your weight, your intensity level and the amount of muscle you already possess.
