Diet Plans for Body Types

Several diets provide recommendations based on body types. One such diet, based on the best selling book, "Dr. Abravanel's Body Type Diet and Nutritional Plan" by Elliot D. Abravanel and Elizabeth King Morrison, divides dietary recommendations into four groups: gonad, adrenal, pituitary and thyroid. The book provides a quiz to determine your body type. There is currently insufficient evidence to support the claims made by the body type diet. Discuss the body type diet with your doctor if you are considering it.

Gonad Type

Gonad types are advised to eat what the book considers thyroid- and pituitary-stimulating foods such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and low-fat dairy. Fish, poultry and refined grains are allowed in moderation. Red meat, cream, butter and high-calorie desserts are restricted. The body type diet claims gonad types are the most suited of all body types for a vegetarian lifestyle.

Adrenal

The body type diet recommends that adrenal types eat plenty of low-fat dairy, whole grains, legumes and vegetables. Fish, poultry and eggs are allowed in moderation. Shellfish, red meat, butter, salty foods and alcohol are restricted. All animal meat should be boiled, baked or grilled with visible fat removed. The diet also suggests that adrenal types should limit adrenal-stimulating foods like meat.

Pituitary Type

The pituitary plan focuses on high protein, recommending plenty of beef, lamb, chicken and pork. Fruits, legumes, whole grains and vegetables are recommended in moderation. According to the body type diet, pituitary types crave cheese. These types should rarely consume dairy products, sugar, caffeine and refined carbohydrates. This plan is aimed at reducing foods that stimulate the pituitary gland.

Thyroid

The goal of thyroid types is to reduce thyroid stimulating foods. Thyroid types are thought to crave caffeine and sweets. The body type diet recommends plenty of fish, eggs, chicken, shellfish, vegetables and low-fat dairy. Moderate legumes, whole grains, butter, red meat and fruit. Avoid caffeine, sugar and refined grain consumption.
