How Can I Lose the Water in My Stomach Fast?

By Shannon Hyland-Tassava ; Updated July 18, 2017

Water retention, also known as edema, is a bothersome condition that can cause weight gain, physical discomfort and irritability. It is a temporary accumulation of excess fluid caused by electrolyte disturbance and fluid level changes in your body and often shows up in the abdomen. This can be especially frustrating when your jeans won't button or your belt feels extra-tight, but there are ways to lose that belly bloat fast.

Drink more water. While this may sound counterintuitive, MayoClinic.com says that drinking at least eight glasses of water per day can help reduce water retention. This is because when your body is dehydrated, it responds by hanging onto whatever water is available, rather than flushing it out naturally over time.

Cut down on sodium. High-sodium foods cause water retention, so decrease your use of salt in cooking and at the dinner table, and cut down on processed foods with a high sodium content.

Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, especially ones high in water. Fruits and vegetables like asparagus, beets, grapes, green beans, leafy greens, onions, garlic and pineapple act as natural diuretics, flushing excess fluid from your body, says the University of Maryland Medical Center. Add more of these healthy foods into your daily diet to lose water weight fast.

Warnings

If your bloating persists or worsens over time, see your doctor for a medical evaluation. Certain serious medical conditions can cause water retention.
