Most people have experienced a blow to the nose that has resulted in swelling in or around the nasal cavities. Swelling of this sort not only alters your appearance but also can make breathing difficult. However, there are steps you can take to reduce the swelling and reduce the size of a bump in your nose.
Elevate your nose. If you have suffered a blow to the nasal area and a bump is developing it is beneficial to stand up or to sit. This reduces the amount of blood that will reach the bump. By doing this, you may get rid of the bump or reduce its size considerably.
Apply ice. Applying ice to the area causes constriction of nearby blood vessels, preventing the accumulation of blood.
Apply pressure to the nose. If the nasal swelling continues after the two previous treatments, apply direct pressure to the nose with your thumb and forefinger.
Bumps that are due to bone damage or nasal membrane growth can only be removed by a health care professional.
If there is significant blood loss, altered consciousness or severe swelling, seek immediate medical attention.
