HCG & Exercise

The HCG hormone is typically thought of as a pregnancy hormone. However, the hormone is also used as part of the HCG diet. This extremely low calorie diet plan combined with HCG injections can yield rapid weight loss results. It is important for those taking HCG to practice extreme caution when it comes to exercise.

HCG Hormone

Human chorionic gonadotropin is also known as HCG. This hormone is used to help increase weight loss. The HCG hormone is naturally produced by pregnant women, according to Dr. Malpani of the Malpani Infertility Clinic. HCG is produced by the cells that make up the placenta and by the placenta as the pregnancy progresses. HCG helps to support a pregnancy by its production of progesterone, which helps the placenta to develop in the early stages of a pregnancy.

The HCG diet plan is designed to enforce rapid weight loss. This plan increases the body's metabolism so that it is able to burn fat at a very fast rate. The HCG hormone is administered through an injection or droplets placed underneath the tongue. Exercise While Using HCG

If you are following the HCG diet, it is highly recommend that you do not engage in strenuous exercise. A diet of 500 calories per day requires very little food consumption, according to HCG Diet Direct. When you are consuming such small amounts of food, your body will not be able to accommodate a workout. While on the HCG diet, you are not able to burn lean muscle. Therefore, strength building exercises are strongly discouraged. The HCG hormone is only able to burn fat. While on the diet, you may engage in light cardiovascular activity, such as walking and jogging are permitted. However, these activities should not carry on for a long period of time. Burning too many calories can lead to exhaustion or a drop in blood sugar.

Exercise after HCG Use

Upon completion of the HCG diet, you may resume a normal exercise regime. To maintain your weight, it is important to exercise. According to the makers of the HCG diet, it is recommended that you start out slowly as the body begins to rebuild its strength. Gradually increase the intensity of your exercise program along with the duration as your body regains its strength.


HCG injections have many risks. Risks include multiple-birth pregnancies, high-risk pregnancies, fetal defects and most commonly with the HCG diet is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which can develop into a life-threatening situation. OHSS can cause pelvic pain, stomach pain, swelling of the extremities, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and infrequent urination. Immediately consult your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. HCG injections are very controversial. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the risks far outweigh the possible benefits.
