The amount of calories you will burn while folding laundry is calculated based on your weight and how long it takes to accomplish the chore. Standing while folding laundry will burn more calories than sitting.

The formula for calculating how many calories you will burn while folding laundry is (METs x 3.5 x weight in kg) ÷ 200) x duration in minutes. The American Heart Association reports that MET, known as metabolic units, is the amount of energy you use while doing an activity. To convert your weight to kilograms, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. If you weigh 120 lbs., your weight in kilograms is 54.5.

METs Values

According to the Compendium of Physical Activities Tracking Guide, which was developed by Dr. Bill Haskell of Stanford University, folding clothes while standing has a MET value of 2.0. Putting your laundry away, which implies walking, has a MET value of 2.3. Based on a similar activity, sitting and wrapping presents, folding laundry while seated has an estimated MET value of 1.5.

Calories Burned

A 120 lb. person folding laundry for 20 minutes while standing burns 38 calories. Putting your family’s laundry away for 10 minutes burns 22 calories. Folding laundry for 15 minutes while seated burns 21 calories.
