Microbrew Beer Calories

By Jessica Bruso

Microbrews are beers made by breweries that sell at least 75 percent of their beer off-site but don't produce more than 15,000 barrels per year. They tend to focus more on the quality of the beer than on the amount of beer they make. Because microbrews are made using a variety of different ingredients and recipes, they can range from 103 to 280 calories per 12 ounces.

Calorie Comparisons

A 12-ounce can or bottle of regular name-brand beer has around 150 calories, while light beers usually contain about 110 calories, and dark beers typically have about 168 calories per serving. Beers from microbreweries tend to have a much wider range in calories. A light beer could be anywhere from about 103 calories to 115 calories, which is on the lower end of the calorie range. Microbrew beers with wheat, gold, pale or amber in the name tend to be moderate in calories and range from about 130 to 175 calories per serving. Stouts, porters and black and tan beers tend to be higher in calories, with anywhere from 180 to 280 calories per 12-ounce serving.
