How to Detoxify Your System to Lose Weight

Starting a diet means cleaning out your refrigerator and pantry, but it’s also a good time to detox your body. Strict detox diets can rob your body of the nutrients it needs to function, but according to Katherine Zeratsky at the Mayo Clinic, “Some people report feeling more focused and energetic during and after detox diets.” She also says that although this effect might be psychological, a short detox diet can help jump start your weight-loss program.

  1. Put a few spoonfuls of fresh lemon juice in a cup of hot water. Use a hand juicer or just squeeze the lemons. Pour the juice through a mesh strainer to remove and seeds and pulp. Lemon juice contains high levels of vitamin C and antioxidants to help support your body through your detox.

  2. Fill a 64 oz. bottle with water. Add lemon juice if you don’t like plain water and keep this bottle with you all day. It is crucial to stay hydrated when detoxing, so try to drink the entire bottle before the end of the day.

  3. Snack on oranges, apples and grapefruits throughout the morning if you get hungry. It is well-known that vitamin C supports the immune system and helps your liver and kidneys to do their jobs of flushing out toxins.

  4. Heat a bowl of organic vegetable soup for lunch. Eat it slowly with a spoon. Soups tend to be filling, and the more slowly you eat, the easier you will recognize that you are full.

  5. Munch on carrot and celery sticks in the afternoon if you feel hungry. Have a glass of unfiltered organic apply juice to help ease any sugar cravings.

  6. Make a salad for dinner with lettuce and raw vegetables. Mix together olive oil and lemon juice, and add pepper—but no salt—for a tangy, healthy, detox salad dressing. The point of a short detox diet is not to starve or torture yourself but to avoid all processed foods, refined sugars, chemical additives and the kind of starchy carbohydrates that cause insulin spikes.

  7. End your evening with a soothing cup of decaffeinated herbal tea or a cup of hot water with lemon juice. This diet can be followed for up to three days, though if you are detoxing for the first time, you might want to limit it to 24 hours.

  8. Tip

    Purchase everything you will need for your detox and the first few days of your diet before you start to avoid the temptations rampant in the supermarket.


    Never stay on a rigid detox diet for more than three days unless you are experienced at detoxing.
