Can Flaxseed Benefit the Hair?

By Abigail Foster

If you seek healthy, strong and full locks, it may be time to take your hair health quest to a more natural, less toxic level. Flaxseeds may be a good substitute for chemical-based products, because they do not pose any known health risk, and can potentially benefit the hair. Of course, this is not true for everyone; results vary based on individual.

Healthy Hair

Your hair, skin, and nails reflect what's going on inside your body. Flaxseeds boast high lignin and omega-3 content. The lignin can promote healthy bowel function, which is your first line of defense against disease. The lignin in flax can also potentially help prevent cancer. Because hair loss often results from disease, having a diet that's high in flaxseed may ultimately help prevent hair loss associated with corresponding health conditions. Again, this is not true in everyone's case.

Strengthener

Brittle hair, skin and nails are often attributed to the lack of omega-3 in the diet. Flax is one of the most concentrated sources of omega-3. A telltale sign that you may have a deficiency of these important nutrients is if you also have dry, scaly skin, and fragile, easily breakable nails. If this is your scenario, then the consumption of flaxseed may help your hair, as well as your nails, become stronger.

Avoid Hair Loss

Omega-3 has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body, which may potentially prevent a permanent hair loss condition called cicatricial (scarring) alopecia. This is a condition in which inflammation causes the hair follicles to be scarred and damaged beyond the point of being able to grow healthy hair. Incorporating more flaxseed in your diet may potentially help prevent or ameliorate this condition. Of course, always check with your doctor if you experience these or any symptoms, to determine the best treatment plan for you.
