Diets for Candida

The candida fungus can lead to a number of health problems, such as oral thrush and yeast infections, if it grows out of control in your body. Most people have small amounts of this fungus in their bodies, but certain medications or health conditions can increase the growth of candida and cause adverse effects. Some people believe that following a specific diet can help limit the growth and spread of candida, although the evidence for this is still preliminary; it isn't clear whether diet plays a role in controlling or eliminating the fungus, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Candida Diet Basics

Because the candida fungus feeds on sugars, most versions of the candida diet limit or eliminate sugars in the diet, whether naturally occurring or added. Sources of mold or yeast, such as cheese, baked goods, peanuts, alcohol and dried fruits, are also best avoided. Some versions of this diet also recommend avoiding vinegar, fermented foods, mushrooms and gluten-containing foods. Foods to eat include nuts, seeds, gluten-free whole grains, protein foods, vegetables and spices such as garlic, cloves, sage, cinnamon and oregano. Further, some versions of this diet recommend avoiding all dairy products, while others recommend including whey, and especially yogurt because of its probiotics, which may be helpful.
