Side Effects of Mangosteen Extract

Native to Southeast Asia, the Garcinia mangostana or mangosteen plant produces fruit that may yield health benefits when used medicinally. Extract from the mangosteen fruit has been used traditionally to alleviate symptoms associated with diarrhea and skin infections. However, more research is needed to support the purported health benefits of mangosteen extract. Before taking any type of mangosteen treatment, be sure to talk with your medical provider about the side effects of mangosteen extract.

Lactic Acidosis

Health professionals with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, or MSKCC, note that in one reported case, severe lactic acidosis occurred following daily consumption of mangosteen juice for 12 months. Lactic acidosis is a condition in which lactic acid abnormally accumulates in the bloodstream. Symptoms associated with lactic acidosis include nausea and weakness. Left undetected or untreated, acid buildup in the body may cause life-threatening medical complications such as shock. Seek care from your medical provider if you experience lactic acidosis symptoms following treatment with mangosteen extract.

Aside from the case of lactic acidosis, there have been no other serious side effects related to mangosteen as of January, 2014. However, the American Cancer Society reminds you that since it is a plant, the risk of an allergic reaction is always there. If you experience any unusual health problems following treatment with this supplement, consult your doctor for further evaluation and care.

Drug Interactions

Inform your physician of all medications you are taking before you add mangosteen extract to your daily regimen. Mangosteen is an antioxidant, which means that it may protect your cells from oxidative damage. This protective effect of mangosteen extract may interfere with certain chemotherapeutic drugs, such as alkylating agents and anthracyclines, or radiation therapy, the MSKCC reports.
