How to Get Rid of Leg Scars Caused by Picking at Scabs

iJocelyn Vodnik/Demand Media

Scars develop when your skin’s tissue lining breaks or tears and produces a natural protein called, “collagen.” Collagen deposits, also known as scars, appear at the site of a wound and assist the skin tissue’s healing process, ultimately healing the wound altogether. When a scab is picked or eliminated from a wound site, the collagen deposit becomes damaged and may cause unintended scarring. The legs are susceptible to visible scars, due to their daily mobility and use. Try using honey and sandalwood to eliminate the appearance of leg scars.

Dip 1 to 2 cotton balls into the honey and apply to the leg scars. According to, Dr. Peter Molan of the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, “Honey provides a moist healing environment for a scar to heal and prevents bacteria growth when wounds are heavily infected.”

Work the honey into the skin where leg scars are visible. Rub the cotton ball in a circular motion over each scar for two minutes.

Apply an adhesive bandage over each honey-covered leg scar. Allow the honey to soak on the skin overnight. Wash off in the morning with cool water.

Repeat this treatment once daily for two weeks. Visible results are expected within the first week of treatment.

Discard the sandalwood leaves from the bowl of water. Dip 1 to 4 cotton balls in the water and apply to the leg scars. Sandalwood proves soothing to irritated skin and acts as a natural antiseptic, which can aide in scar healing.
