How to Get Rid of Milia Under the Eye

By Heather Meehan ; Updated July 27, 2017

Harmless small white bumps appearing under the eyes or on the eyelids are known as milia. They are tiny keratin-filled cysts that can be very difficult to remove. Left untreated, milia do not pose any health risk. However, they can be unsightly and adversely affect your self-esteem. Removing milia is painless and can be done at home.

To Treat Milia at Home

  1. Soak a tea bag in a mug of very warm water. Squeeze out the excess liquid and apply the bag directly to the milia. The heat will help to remove dead skin cells and can loosen the milia.

  2. Use a mild face scrub to gently exfoliate the under eye area affected by the milia. Gently rub in a circular motion, being careful to avoid getting the scrub into your eyes. Rinse well with warm water. Pat dry.

  3. Apply a thin layer of a salicylic acid based acne cream to the milia to dry out the cysts.

  4. Repeat the above steps once a week until the milia vanish.

  5. Tip

The under-eye area can become dried out due to the salicylic acid in the acne cream. Between treatments apply pure aloe vera gel to soothe skin without clogging pores.

Avoid using needles to force the milia out. This could cause irreparable scarring and accidental damage to your eyes.
