How to Prevent Social, Emotional or Mental Problems

By Angie Briggs ; Updated July 27, 2017

Learning how to relieve stress and adopting healthy lifestyle habits can help prevent social, emotional or mental problems from arising or worsening. These problems can range from depression and anxiety to phobias, anger issues and other serious mental illnesses. Sometimes mental illness is a chemical, physical or genetic issue and stress can often trigger or make it worse. Being emotionally healthy enables you to better control your thoughts, feelings and behaviors, and maintain a healthy perspective on life.

Practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing and meditation, to help keep stress at a manageable level. Don't wait until stress overwhelms you, incorporate these strategies into your daily life.

Keep a healthy balance between work and social life. Make time for activities you enjoy and focus on the positive in life.

Learn to appropriately express feelings. Bottling things inside will only make them harder to deal with in the long run.

Take proper care of your body. Regular exercise, a healthy diet and elimination of harmful substances helps to improve mental well-being.
