A nebulizer is an apparatus used by cystic fibrosis sufferers. Cystic fibrosis is a congenital disease that causes mucous buildup in the lungs. A nebulizer fits into your mouth and delivers a fine mist of medicine to your lungs. You may need to dilute the medication with saline solution in some cases. A saline solution is salty water that is similar to the body's own fluid composition. If you choose to make your own saline solution, ensure all the instruments and ingredients you use are sterile.

Begin with a clean work area. It is imperative that you have a clean environment when preparing the saline. Put on your gloves.

Pour the water into the saucepan and heat on high until boiling. Once boiling, cover the pot and allow to boil for 5 minutes.

Remove the pot from the heat and allow to cool to room temperature.

Pour the salt into the cooled, sterilized water and stir to dissolve. Stir thoroughly until there is no grit in the bottom of the pot.

Use the saline solution immediately or put into a sterilized storage container and store in the refrigerator.

Warning

Consult your physician before making or using saline solution to determine if this concentration and method is right for you. Once you have made it, do not dip or put anything into the saline solution. This can contaminate the fluid with germs and bacteria.
