Keflex is the brand name of the drug cephalexin 12. Cephalexin is an antibiotic in a class called cephalosporins 1. These work by preventing bacteria from reproducing. The Merck Manual, a reference manual for drugs, states that cephalexin is a first-generation cephalosporin 12. As an antibiotic similar to penicillin, cephalexin may cause allergic reactions as well as more generalized side effects 1.

Other gastrointestinal side effects include stomach pain, changes in stool color, nausea and vomiting. Some patients may vomit blood. The Mayo Clinic notes that serious neuromuscular effects may occur, including joint and muscle pain and possibly arthritis 2. Patients may experience neurological side effects such as dizziness.
