The most basic eye wash is a simple mixture of salt and water. This can also be used to treat the sinuses. Boil 1 cup of water with 1 tsp. of salt. If you have weak, tired eyes, substitute the salt for boric acid. Boric acid is a very weak acid but is used as an antiseptic. Allow both solutions to cool completely before using as a wash. Use several times a day for the best benefit.
Another simple eye wash recipe is with distilled water and green tea. Make the tea using 2 parts of green tea to 1 part of water. Green tea is supposed to be very cooling to the eyes and can relieve symptoms of itchy eyes. Allow your tea bags to cool and apply them directly to the eyes. This can relieve inflammation and swelling of tired eyes.
Herbal Eye Wash
Many people use herbs and tinctures for their eye washes. When using herbs and tinctures, you should be sure to strain the mixture completely. Try using a coffee filter to be sure all of the small particles are out. Any small particles will cause eye irritation. Mix together 1 tsp. of water, 2 tbsp. of rose water and 5 drops of tincture of euphoria. Blend the mixture well and strain. This will help relieve strained tired eyes.
