Carb-Free Snacks Under 100 Calories

By Lou Martin

Whether you’re a diabetic looking to keep your blood sugar levels under control or just want to eliminate carbohydrates from your diet, snack time doesn’t have to consist of foods rich in carbohydrates. In fact, several foods -- mostly meats -- can give you a low-calorie, carb-free boost to help you get through the rest of your day, including poultry, red meat, seafood and processed meats.

When you’re looking for a midday snack that’s less than 100 calories and carb-free, look no further than a 2-ounce boneless skinless chicken breast, which contains 60 calories, 1 gram of fat and 13 grams of protein. With no carbohydrates, this snack gets 18 percent of its calories from fat and 82 percent from protein. Turkey is another carb-free snack that’s low in calories, containing 94 calories per 3-ounce serving. This snack alternative comes with half a gram of fat and 21 grams of protein. A leaner choice than chicken breast, turkey breast gets 92 percent of its calories from protein and 8 percent from fat.

Seafood is another carb-free snack option that’s low in calories. A 1-ounce serving of tuna has 33 calories, 8 grams of protein and no fat, which means the snack gets all of its calories from protein. Half a cup of canned shrimp contains 64 calories, 13 grams of protein and 1 gram of fat, which breaks down to 12 percent fat and 88 percent protein. A medium-sized crab cake contains 95 calories, 5 grams of fat and 13 grams of fat and gets 47 percent of its calories from fat and 53 percent from protein.

Red Meat

Lean cuts of red meat, such as ground beef and steak, can be just as healthy and low in calories as their seafood and poultry counterparts. For example, a 1-ounce strip of lean steak contains 53 calories, 2 grams of fat and 8 grams of protein. A 2-ounce patty of lean ground beef has 76 calories, 3 grams of fat and 12 grams of protein. These snack alternatives are also completely carb-free.

Processed Meats

Processed meats, such as lunch meats and bacon, make viable carb-free snack options that are less than 100 calories. For example, a 1-ounce slice of cooked ham lunch meat contains 8 calories, 2 grams of protein and no fat. A slice of bacon has 27 calories, 2 grams of fat and 2 grams of protein. A link of sausage is high in fat -- 10 grams per link -- but is carb-free and contains 95 calories and 2 grams of protein.
