Is Fresh Cantaloupe Juice Healthy?

Cantaloupe is a species of melon with a light orange-hued flesh and is related to watermelon and honeydew. The fruit can be made into a light tasting juice and it can be blended with other fruit or vegetable juices. Drinking fresh juices helps you get vitamins and minerals also found in the whole fruit.

Benefits of Potassium

Cantaloupe juice is a rich source of potassium. Potassium plays an essential role in nervous system function and allows nerves to convey electrochemical signals to each other. In addition, potassium contributes to bone tissue, helps muscle contraction and might help reduce blood pressure. One and a half cup of melon balls will juice down to roughly 1 cup of cantaloups juice. This serving contains approximately 709 milligrams of potassium, or 15 percent of the daily recommended intake, according to the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University. Store-bought cantaloupe juice may vary in nutrient levels, so refer to the product's label to determine its nutrient content.

Benefits of Vitamin C

Fresh cantaloupe juice also contains vitamin C. Consuming the fresh juice made from 1 and 1/2 cup of cantaloupe balls provides 97.4 milligrams of vitamin C, significantly contributing towards the daily intake 75 milligrams for women and surpassing the recommended 90 milligrams for men.

Benefits of Vitamin A

Cantaloupe juice contains a large amount of beta-carotene, which is a precursor to vitamin A. Beta-carotene gives the fruit with its characteristic orange hue along with its nutritional value. Cells convert beta-carotene into an active form of vitamin A then use the vitamin to maintain vision, grow healthy skin, support the immune system and promote proper cellular maturation. The 1-cup serving of cantaloupe juice contains 8,979 international units of vitamin A, containing more than double the recommended daily intake of 3,000 international units for men and triple the 2,333 international units for women. Combining cantaloupe juice with carrot or pumpkin juice creates a drink that is an excellent source of vitamin A.


Even though fresh cantaloupe juice has a number of health benefits, you should consume fruit juices in moderation. By consuming the juice instead of the whole fruit you miss out beneficial nutrients such as dietary fiber, a type of carbohydrate required for digestive health. Fruit juices tend to contain more calories than fresh fruit because preparing the juice often requires using more than one serving of the fruit, advises registered dietitian Lisa Cicciarello Andrews on the University of Cincinnati's NetWellness site.
