How to Drink Aloe Water

Aloe vera is a plant that belongs to the cactus family. Aloe vera has many applications as a natural remedy, some of which have been studied and some of which are purely anecdotal. Aloe vera can be used to treat constipation and might be effective in treating high cholesterol and ulcerative colitis, according to MedlinePlus. One of the easiest ways to take aloe vera by mouth is to prepare your own aloe water.

Use fresh aloe vera leaves whenever possible. The pulpy flesh of the leaves contain the most juice when used immediately after cutting them from the plant. If you wait, you’ll lose at least part of the juice. If you don’t have access to an aloe vera plant, look for concentrated aloe juice, sold in small bottles at health food stores and vitamin shops.

Peel the leaves and remove the pulp. Either mash it with a fork or drop it inside a blender. Add water and blend well. The proportion of aloe to water depends on your taste. Start with 8 oz. of water for every medium-size aloe leaf. Add more or less depending on whether the flavor is palatable or not. If you’re using concentrated juice, read the label to see what ratio of juice to water you need to use.

Drink 2 oz. of the aloe water twice a day to start. If it doesn’t cause diarrhea, you can increase the dose to 4 oz. twice a day. You might need to experiment with different proportions of water and aloe until you find the right one. If you experience stomach cramps, frequent or loose bowel movements, nausea, or other side effects, adjust the dose accordingly.

Tip

If you do not like the flavor of aloe, add 4 oz. of apple or orange juice and 4 oz. of water to the blender, instead of using only water. The juice will help mask the flavor.
