Side Effects of Arginine Alpha Ketoglutarate

Arginine alpha ketoglutarate is supplement marketed as an energy booster that helps your body produce more nitric oxide, which is a chemical that's supposed to improve blood flow; however, it's not effective, according to a 2012 study published in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition 1. There are also reports that AAKG may cause side effects. Consult your doctor before adding any dietary supplements to your routine.

Problems with AAKG

Although the 2012 study published in JISSN reported no adverse effects from the study participants taking AAKG, a 2009 case report published in Human and Experimental Toxicology says otherwise. This report discusses two individuals that experienced ill effects after taking AAKG, including fainting, dizziness, palpitations, vomiting and headache. The University of Michigan Health System also notes that people with herpes should not take AAKG because it may lead to a breakout of the virus 3.
