The Calories in a Sugar Cookie

By Nina K.

Traditional sugar cookies are packed with butter -- and of course, sugar -- so they're relatively high in calories. Like most cookies, these treats are best reserved for special occasions because they provide relatively few nutrients despite the heavy calorie load. To help maintain a healthy diet, look for reduced-calorie cookies or make them at home using leaner ingredients.

Calorie Details

The calorie count depends on the product, but the average store-bought sugar cookie contains about 72 calories per piece. The average cookie baked from commercially prepared dough is similar, at 73 calories per cookie. You may also find reduced-calorie sugar cookies at the market, which contain about 30 calories per cookie. If you're baking your cookies from scratch, look for recipes that use trans-fat-free vegetable spread instead of butter. One version from "Good Housekeeping," which also uses healthy whole-wheat flour, contains just 35 calories per cookie.
