Ocuvite Side Effects

Ocuvite is a supplement that contains vitamins C, E and beta-carotene among other vitamins and minerals. Ocuvite is touted to help treat macular degeneration— a chronic eye disease marked by the wear and tear of tissue in the part of your eye that controls central vision. According to the University of Toledo Medical Center, there's currently no treatment available that can cure dry macular degeneration. However an Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) sponsored by the National Eye Institute found many of the vitamins included in the preparation of Ocuvite lowered the odds of vision loss advancing to moderate or severe degrees by as much as 25 percent. There are a number of side effects associated with the use of Ocuvite.

Side Effects

There are few serious side effects linked to Ocuvite when the supplement is taken as directed. However when taken in large doses, vomiting and nausea may occur.

The less serious side effects connected to the use of Ocuvite are an unpleasant taste in your mouth, staining of the teeth, fatigue and headaches. There may also be a discoloration of urine and feces.

If you have an allergic reaction to Ocuvite you may break out in hives and have breathing problems 1. There may be swelling in your face, tongue, throat or lips. If you have any of these symptoms, seek medical care right away.

Drug Interactions

Although Ocuvite may work together with some drugs, as is typical of vitamin and mineral supplements, it can have an impact on the therapeutic effects of some medicines. If you take diuretics (water pills), tretinoin (Vesanoid) or non-sterodial anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) such as ibuprofin (Motrin, Advil), naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) consult with your doctor before taking Ocuvite. You may have to adjust your current medications before taking certain vitamins and minerals contained in Ocuvite.

If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant talk with your doctor before you start taking Ocuvite. Some of the ingredients in Ocuvite -- such as lutein and zeaxanthin -- have not been evaluated for their safety if taken during pregnancy. It is also unwise to take Ocuvite if you are nursing. Multivitamins and minerals can pass into breast milk, and may have adverse effects on a baby. Do not take Ocuvite on an empty stomach; take it with food and a glass of milk.
