Lysine & Hair Loss in Women

Lysine is an essential amino acid found in most foods. While used in supplement or pill form to help the body produce enzymes, hormones and antibodies, it has been found to be successful in the treatment of outbreaks due to the herpes virus. Female hair loss typically begins around the age of 50 and continues from there. Pattern baldness in women is not as easily spotted as it has been in men, and to effectively diagnose the issue, it should be taken to a physician. L-lysine may help with some types of female hair loss, but there is no conclusive scientific evidence to prove it.


The amino acid L-lysine is best found in fish, legumes and some whole grains. A healthy dose is considered to be anywhere from 1-1.5 g, taken in supplement form or from food. Deficiency of lysine is rare, but it can result in hair loss, weight loss, anemia or even enzyme disorders. While it can help the body to recover from surgery or injury, and can aid the body in rebuilding muscle and absorbing calcium, the amino acid is extremely effective in helping the body to also absorb iron and zinc.

Hair Loss in Women

According to the American Hair Loss Association, approximately 40 percent of hair loss sufferers are women. The most typical cause of this loss is due to androgenetic alopecia, which occurs as a result of sensitivity to male hormone, like testosterone, on the hair follicle. Other patterns of hair loss in women include trichotillomania, caused by excessive or compulsive hair pulling; alopecia areata, caused by an autoimmune disorder; triangular alopecia, which is the loss of hair mainly in the temporal areas; scarring alopecia, which is hair loss due to scarring on the scalp; and telogen effluvium, caused by shedding a large percentage of hair at one time.

L-Lysine for Hair Loss

While the results have not been proven effective, some studies have related the cause of hair loss in women to deficiency of iron. Because L-lysine can help the body to readily absorb this vitamin, is was suggested that the use of this supplement, when taken in addition to others would help the body to better absorb iron and therefore would reduce hair loss.


Overdose of the L-lysine amino acid is possible, and symptoms may include swelling, hives or trouble breathing. In addition, when taken in large doses of a longer period of time, it has been liked to increased cholesterol levels.


The consumption of Lysine has not been proven by the FDA to be used as treatment for any disease. If you are pregnant or nursing, or suffer from liver or kidney disease, do not consume lysine. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before beginning any type of herbal supplement regimen.
