How to Substitute Protein Powder for Sugar in Icing

If you can't imagine eating your favorite desserts without icing, but are looking for a healthier alternative to sugar, there is hope. Icing can be made using protein powder in the place of sugar. Foods high in sugar can lead to obesity and tooth decay. Protein powder is an excellent substitution for sugar because protein is required to repair cells in your body and make new ones. According to a study done by researchers at Brescia Univesity, the consumption of protein powder can, "increase life expectancy by 12 percent for middle-aged people." The next time you make dessert, top it with a healthier choice of icing.

  1. Pour 35 g of vanilla protein powder into a bowl. Any other flavor of protein can be used as a substitute for vanilla; 35 g equals one serving of protein powder.

  2. Slowly add water to the protein powder. Add the water 1 tbsp. at a time, stirring well with a fork each time you add the water. The water should be very cold.

  3. Continue to add water until you have reached your desired consistency for the icing. The icing will be difficult to stir in the beginning. Although the icing may be thick, it should be free of any lumps.

  4. Allow the icing to set for one minute before applying it to your dessert. After topping your dessert with the icing, letting it settle for one hour will result in the best taste.

  5. Tip

    Don't use a blender, as this can stiffen the icing.

    Top your icing with your favorite nuts, such as walnuts or almonds, for added flavor and health benefits.
