List of Reasons Why People Should Eat Healthy

By Laurel Heidtman

In the United States, most people are fortunate enough to have access to a wide variety of plentiful food. Unfortunately, many of those foods are detrimental to good health at the same time they are enhanced with salt, sugar and chemicals to make them appealing to the eyes and taste buds. It’s not always easy, but there are compelling reasons to choose the very real rewards of good food over the temptation of unhealthy food.

Good Health Now

The Palo Alto Medical Foundation says one of the best reasons to eat healthy is to give the body what it needs to grow new cells and tissues, cleanse itself of toxins and perform all the tasks it needs to do. With good nutrition, people have more energy, are more alert and can be their best every day.

Good Health Later

HealthierUs.gov, a joint venture of the Office of the President and the U.S. Department of Human Services, goes even further by saying the benefits of eating healthy are not just in the present. Eating healthy helps to prevent diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis and some cancers, even reducing cancer deaths by up to 35 percent.

Eating large quantities of unhealthy food and drinking giant-size high-calorie drinks result in unwanted pounds. The Mayo Clinic advises to make a habit of eating nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. These foods are naturally low-calorie as long as sauces, butter or other spreads are not added in excess.

While eating nutritious food does make and keep people healthy, it does not guarantee nothing bad will ever happen. Healthy, strong people still have accidents, catch an infectious disease or even suffer from a genetic disorder. And they still grow old. What eating nutritious food does do, however, is increase odds that recovery from an accident or infectious disease will be complete, and that controlling and coping with a genetic disorder goes as smoothly as possible. While it may or may not add years to a life span, it can add quality to those years.

Tastes Good

Good food tastes good. Of course, bad food can taste good, too. The point is people do not have to give up taste in order to get and stay healthy. The crunch of walnuts, the sweetness of blueberries, the yumminess of warm cinnamon-enhanced oatmeal and the satisfying texture and taste of grilled salmon are all pleasures to the palate. And there’s no downside when it comes to health.

Right Thing to Do

Most people would never dream of mistreating their car by putting watered-down gas in the tank, yet they mistreat their bodies by eating food lacking the nutrients needed for good health. The human body is an amazing and miraculous thing, resilient and strong, designed to last for decades with proper care. Respecting it by giving it what it needs in the form of healthy food is the right and smart thing to do.
