Weight Loss Camps in Georgia

By Rhiannon Kutzer ; Updated July 18, 2017

There are many types of weight loss camps in Georgia, ranging from boot camp style to a more spiritual approach. Whatever your style, you can be sure to find a camp that will help you get rid of those unwanted pounds.

Day Camps

If you can’t sneak away from work and the kids for a week or two during the summer, don't worry. A number of day camps in Georgia offer a nice alternative for the busy adult who still wants to lose that weight. Some camps, like the Columbus GA Adventure Boot Camp for Women, offer great flexibility: Campers can come for three, four or five days per week, one hour per day, for four weeks. Others, like the Atlanta-based Get in Shape Boot Camp, offer a boot camp atmosphere for different skill levels at various locations and memberships range from one week to one year.

Weight loss, camaraderie and education about proper exercise techniques and nutritional principles are the most common benefits weight loss camps provide. Additionally, positive psychological changes were shown in a recent study documented by the International Journal of Obesity: “Body shape dissatisfaction significantly decreased and self-esteem increased on measures of global self-worth, athletic competence, and physical appearance, in the camp attendees.”

Kids at Camp

Just like adults, kids can find weight loss difficult. In fact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that “approximately 80% of children who were overweight at aged [sic] 10–15 years were obese adults at age 25 years.” Camps can offer a way for kids to get away from the temptations of junk food. Unfortunately for overweight kids in Georgia, there are no camps designed only for weight loss. So if traveling is not an option, another great choice is one of the hundreds of sport-specific camps operating in Georgia. These camps will not only keep your kid moving, but will hone his abilities in the sport of his choice.

Ditch the visions of trainer Jillian Michaels from NBC’s “The Biggest Loser” screaming for her trainees to get in that last rep. Georgia’s weight loss camps are not all boot camp style. If a spa is more your speed, check out Mandala Wellness Retreat and Spa for a combined spiritual and physical approach to weight loss.

Beginning any fitness routine poses medical risks as the body is not used to the strain of exercise. Weight loss camps are designed to yank the pounds off in a limited amount of time, so please consult with your doctor before beginning any fitness routine.
