How to Put Tea Bags on the Eyes for Relaxation

By Kay Ireland ; Updated July 18, 2017

Cooled tea bags can help reduce puffiness and relax your eyes after a hard day's work. When you have tired eyes, you may feel exhausted and harried. By taking five minutes to stop and relax with tea bags, you can recharge and reap the benefits of relaxation. Chamomile tea is ideal for eye relaxation; it won't hurt the eyes, and Medline Plus notes that it's been used for its inflammation-reducing and calming properties.

  1. Fill a kettle or a pot of water and set it on the stove to boil. When the water reaches the boiling point, pour it into a bowl and drop in two chamomile herbal tea bags.

  2. Allow the tea to steep for one minute only, warns Linda G. Rector-Page in her book, "Linda Page's Healthy Healing." Remember that you're not making tea, so you don't want all of the chamomile to escape the tea bag. You only want to wet and warm the tea bag to release some of its relaxing properties and aroma.

  3. Remove the tea bags with a set on tongs, and discard the water. Place the tea bags in an empty cup to cool. Never apply hot tea bags to your eyes, as they can scald the skin and cause severe damage.

  4. Test the tea bags with your finger. Cool tea bags will be the most relaxing, as the coolness can soothe tired eyes and reduce inflammation that causes puffiness. But if you're anxious to relax, warm tea bags are fine as well. Just make sure the tea bags are cool enough to handle.

  5. Lay down on a flat surface and apply one tea bag to each eye. Spend at least five minutes relaxing and breathing in the aroma of the chamomile. Since herbal tea bags are completely safe, there's no limit as to how long you can leave them on your eyes. Remove and discard when you're finished. Repeat daily if necessary.
