What Is Arnica Montana 30X?

By Andrew Bennett ; Updated August 14, 2017

Arnica Montana 30X is just one strength of a popular homeopathic remedy used for various common soft tissue injuries, such as bruises, sprains, and muscle aches. Homeopathic medicine is profoundly different from pharmaceutical, herbal or nutraceutical medical practice. Homeopathics such as Arnica montana rarely interact with other vitamins, herbs or medications. For safety, double-check with your physician if you have any disease, are taking medication or if you are pregnant or lactating.

Arnica and Homeopathic Remedies

Homeopathic remedies, such as Arnica Montana 30X, are different from conventional medicine. They are made of potent ingredients that are extremely diluted to cause a specific effect in the body. The philosophy of homeopathic treatment is the Law of Similarity, which says that "like cures like." In other words, a substance that causes a certain illness in large doses, will help similar ailments in small diluted amounts. Minuscule doses of these symptom-causing ingredients stimulate the body's natural healing capacities. Homeopathic remedies are said to heal by working with the body, allowing it to heal itself.

What is Arnica Montana 30X

Arnica montana is a plant that grows in Northern Europe. Since the 1500s it has been used medicinally for various ailments. In Germany, where it is included in many medicines, Arnica montana is known as a "wunderkraut" or miracle herb. Arnica montana is a yellow flowering plant, also known as wolf's bane or mountain tobacco. It contains such chemical constituents as helenalin, thymol, and natural fungicides. Experts say the sesquiterpene lactones are the chemical components that account for the anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving benefits.

Benefits of Use

Arnica montana users report faster wound-healing, particularly for bruises, sprains, muscle aches, insect bites and swelling associated with bone fracture. Currently, Arnica montana is most commonly used as a pre- and post-op treatment for surgery. The decrease in bruising and trauma is said to help with recovery after an operation and decrease scarred tissue and pain. Bruising occurs due to excess blood in and in between capillaries, which causes swelling and/or the common black and blue appearance. Arnica montana reportedly increases blood flow and stimulates white blood cells to heal and clear the black and blue look.

Strengths

Homeopathic dosages and strengths can be confusing to the untrained eye. Strengths such as 30X, 6C and other demarcations are commonly found. All homeopathic remedies are formulated from an original tincture or "mother potency." The number in the strength refers to the number of dilutions from the original tincture. And the "X" or "C" refers to the parts of dilution, 1 to 10 or 1 to 100 respectively. For example, 30X Arnica montana has been diluted with alcohol or lactose 30 times. The "X" means that each dilution was performed at a ratio of one part Arnica to nine parts of the diluting substance. "C" would indicate one part homeopathic medicine to 99 parts diluting base.

Who Needs Arnica Montana 30X

Athletes and other active people can benefit from the muscle-soothing effects of Arnica montana. Some athletes have been known to use Arnica as a pre-workout supplement to prevent excess muscle and joint soreness following extreme activity. When applied topically, Arnica has a similar effect to NSAIDs, such as Advil or other ibuprofen equivalents. The difference being that proper dosages of arnica are not associated with dangerous side effects like over-the-counter pain medications. However, large topical doses or overuse of Arnica montana can lead to skin rashes and discomfort. Anyone with a soft tissue injury can benefit from Arnica montana. Cosmetic surgery patients find that Arnica reduces swelling after surgical procedures, particularly those that involve the delicate soft tissues of the facial area. Arnica may be used in conjunction with quercetin, bromelain, and vitamin C to further enhance its effects. Homeopathic remedies usually come in tablet or pellet form. Use three tablets, three times a day. Boiron, a popular homeopathic manufacturer, recommends five pellets dissolved in the mouth, three times a day.
