Can Foods Help Reduce Facial Scarring?

Foods that reduce facial scarring can improve your skin' appearance and overall health the natural way. No expensive treatments or products are needed. Eating a well-balanced diet consisting of foods from all groups can improve your skin health and aid in wound healing. While no individual food will significantly change the appearance of your skin or erase scarring, foods rich in a few key nutrients might offer some benefits.

Fruits

Varieties of fruit can reduce your facial scarring. Most fruits contain rich amounts of vitamin C, according to the National Institutes of Health. Vitamin C helps build and repair tissue throughout your body, including your skin, by boosting collagen production. This nutrient also acts as an antioxidant in your body and helps fight free radicals that want to damage your skin.

Choose citrus fruits, which contain the highest levels of vitamin C. Citrus fruits include tangerines, lemons, limes, grapefruit and oranges. Strawberries, red and black raspberries, marionberries, huckleberries, cranberries and blueberries supply rich sources of vitamin C. Drinking pure fruit juice made from these sources will supply you with vitamin C as well.

Other fruits rich in vitamin C include cantaloupe, watermelon and fruits in the tropical family like guava, papaya, mango and pineapple. Bright fruits also contain more vitamin A; beta carotene, an antioxidant and form of vitamin A, helps build and maintain healthy skin, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Vegetables

Most vegetables contain vitamins C and A as well. Obtain the highest level of vitamin C by eating broccoli, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, varieties of winter squashes including zucchini and acorn and white and sweet potatoes. Also consume leafy greens like turnip greens, endive, watercress, bok choy, radicchio, mustard greens, kale, Swiss chard and varieties of lettuce. Vitamin C-rich lettuce includes red leaf, romaine and green varieties. Drinking pure vegetable juices offers an alternative for vitamin C consumption. Whole Grains and Nuts

Whole grains and nuts contain rich amounts of vitamin E, according to the National Institutes of Health. Vitamin E is known for aiding in the wound-healing process, which can reduce your facial scarring. Whole grain sources include wheat germ and wheat germ oil, oats and oatmeal, wheat bran, brown rice, barley, oat bran, wheat bran, whole wheat, quinoa, triticale and millet. Other options include whole grain pasta, crackers, breads, baked items, energy bars, boxed cereals and snack items. Look for almonds as an excellent source of vitamin E. Other nuts -- including walnuts, peanuts and pecans -- also offer vitamin E.
