Extenze is an herbal supplement that is promoted in the United States to naturally “enhance” males. Although its controversial television commercials do not claim that Extenze can physically enlarge penises, many websites that sell Extenze do. Extenze capsules contain ingredients that could promote energy, increased blood flow and increased libido, which attract consumers with erectile dysfunction or impotency. According to the Minnesota Men’s Health Center, 30 million American men suffer from erectile dysfunction, with diabetics and smokers being the most affected.
Vitamin and Mineral Ingredients
Each capsule of Extenze contains 400 mcg of folic acid, which is a variety of B vitamin, and 25 mg of zinc oxide. Folic acid is known to help prevent anemia of the blood.
“Pro-hormone Support” Ingredients
The manufacturers of Extenze have divided its ingredients into categories that infer certain biological activities, although they do not present any medical documentation to support their claims. In the “pro-hormone support” category, each capsule of Extenze is listed as containing 50 mg of micronized DHEA, or dehydroepiandrostarone, and 10 mg of pregnanolone, or 3β-hydroxypregn-5-en-20-one. According to MayoClinic.com, DHEA is a building block for sex hormones and may help some men with erectile dysfunction, especially if they have low testosterone.
“Bio-enhancement Support” Ingredients
In this category, each capsule of Extenze is listed as containing 25 mg of a combination of black pepper seed, piper longum seed and ginger root. Ginger root is known to have anti-inflammatory properties.
“Sexual Response Enhancement Support” Ingredients
In this category, each capsule of Extenze is listed as containing a combined 600mg of yohimbe bark extract, tribulus terrestris extract, Korean ginseng root extract, cnidium monnier seed, eleutherococcus root extract standardized to 0.8 percent eleutherosides, xanthroparmelia scarbrosa, GABA, velvet deer antler, horny goat weed, damiana leaf, muira puama extract, pumpkin seed, stinging nettle root, astragalus root, licorice root extract, L-arginine hydrochloride, Ho Shou Wu root extract and boron.
MayoClinic.com notes that yohimbe may help with erectile dysfunction, especially if psychologically caused, and horny goat weed may help raise low levels of testosterone and thyroid hormone. Additionally, PubMed cites a 2003 study on rats that concluded tribulus terrestris did increase sexual activity and weight gain. Finally, Korean ginseng can increase physical endurance and promote cardiovascular health, as cited by the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Each capsule of Extenze also contains dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, stearic acid, dextrin, titanium dioxide, hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose, FD&C blue #1 aluminum lake, dextrose monohydrate, lecithin, maltodextrine, macrogol, magnesium stearate and silica.
