Adipex Side Effects

By Hannah Rice Myers ; Updated July 18, 2017

Known generically as phentermine, Adipex, also sometimes called Adipex-P, is a stimulant that affects the central nervous system to help suppress appetite, thus aiding in weight loss. Drugs.com explains that doctors prescribe this medication for overweight patients who also have risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

Dry Mouth

Drugs.com notes that dry mouth is a common side effect of Adipex. While it can be both annoying and uncomfortable, a dry mouth that lasts over a long period of time can cause dental problems, as it increases the amount of plaque buildup between the teeth. Sipping water or sugarless drinks through the day can help, as can rinsing multiple times a day. Tobacco products and alcoholic drinks should be avoided, as they make a dry mouth worse. Patients can also increase saliva flow by sucking on sugarless candy or chewing sugarless gum, and using a humidifier at night to add moisture to the air.

Insomnia

While the exact number of patients who suffer from insomnia due to Adipex use is not clear, the fact that it is a stimulant--a drug that increases energy levels--explains why it is a common side effect of the medication. The signs of insomnia include waking up earlier than normal, waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to fall back asleep, not being able to fall asleep at all and waking up in the morning feeling lethargic. To combat these symptoms, patients can sleep in a dark, quiet room, avoid exercising two hours before bed, participate in a quiet activity for a few minutes before bed, and nap no later than 3 p.m.

Impotence and Sex Drive

Adipex is known for causing sexual side effects, especially impotence and a decrease in sex drive, according eMedTV.

Impotence, also known as erectile dysfunction, prevents men from achieving and/or maintaining an erection during sexual arousal. Over time, this problem can have a serious impact on a man's psychological well-being, his self-esteem and the relationship with his partner.

Adipex-P can also cause changes in a patient's sex drive, which affects both men and women. EMedTV explains that it is not clear whether patients experience an increase in libido, a decrease in libido or both.
