Natural Ways to Reduce Eye Puffiness

If your first glance in the mirror reveals puffy eyes rather than bright eyes, it's time to slow down and take a look at your beauty routine. Traditionally, it's been thought that late nights and unhealthy habits contributed to bags under the eyes. More recent thought is that allergies, sinus troubles or the common cold contribute. Unfortunately, genetics and aging also figure in, and you can't change those. But a few time-honored remedies are pleasant -- and even if they don't help much, Dr. Robert Schmerling of Harvard Health says they can't hurt.

An Eye on Basics

If you've ruled out colds and allergies, you might want to look at how you sleep, Schmerling advises. A horizontal position causes fluid to accumulate, which contributes to puffy eyes and undereye bags. Prop up with more pillows, then apply a cold compress for five minutes in the morning, suggests "Real Simple." Get plenty of sleep and drink plenty of water -- of course. Check with your doctor if your baggy eyes signify fluid retention for which there's no easy explanation.

A Quick Beauty Break

In addition to cold compresses, chilled cucumbers have long been suggested for baggy eyes. It might just be because those round slices fit perfectly over your peepers. Caffeine is considered helpful, so chilled black tea bags are another possibility, according to "Allure" magazine. Raw potato slices are another suggestion, as they contain catecholase, which may help lighten the skin. Try gentle massage around the eye area with a hydrating lotion as a finishing touch.
