Side Effects of Obagi Blue Peel

By Shelley Moore ; Updated July 18, 2017

The Obagi Blue Peel provides rejuvenating effects by removing surface layers of skin from the face and any other areas of the body a client chooses. The peel reduces sun damage, uneven texture and color, wrinkles and acne scars. Developed by a dermatologist, this chemical peel is a medical treatment that must be administered by a physician. The blue dye helps the doctor see that he applies the treatment evenly. Most people experience some relatively minor side effects.

Pain

The client may feel a temporary burning sensation or some pain while undergoing the Obagi Blue Peel, but this is never severe, asserts the Milo Clinic in London. Clients can take some pain relief medication before the peel, and clinics commonly provide a cooling fan and cool packs for the skin.

Swelling

Some swelling may occur after the Obagi Blue Peel, according to Faces, a cosmetic plastic surgery center in Fresno, California. Physicians administer the peel to different depths, depending on the level of skin damage to correct, and swelling varies depending on the depth of the peel.

Peeling and Redness

Peeling and redness from the Obagi Blue Peel are similar to a sunburn. Skin begins peeling within three days, but it should not be severe enough to interfere with the client's lifestyle. Complete healing should occur within 10 days. Some people may experience itching and a small amount of oozing.

Complications

Complications associated with treatments such as laser surgery or dermabrasion are possible but not likely with the Obagi Blue Peel, asserts Faces. These complications include development of keloids, scarring or infection. Going to a doctor experienced in cosmetic skin treatments can lower these risks. Temporary pigmentation problems may develop, but the client typically can correct them by following after-peel instructions and using specific home-use skin care products.
