3 Doughnut Recipes That Are Totally Guilt Free

The words “healthy” and “doughnuts” don’t typically belong in the same sentence: Doughnuts are typically fried and then doused with confectioners’ sugar or an ultra-sweet glaze.

But if we’re being honest, these fried treats are usually hard to resist because they’re so darn good.

So, as a favor to our waistlines, we’ve created three incredibly delicious (and simple to make) gluten- and grain-free doughnuts. One is Paleo, one is vegan, one is high-protein — and all are free of starches, gums, tapioca products and other high-starch pseudo foods.

And once you get in the habit of making your own healthy doughnuts, you just might never bat another lash at a store-bought doughnut again.

High-Protein Chocolate Doughnuts

These protein-rich doughnuts are loaded with fiber-filled black beans, protein powder and nearly half a dozen eggs. Choose any heat-stable protein powder you prefer — chocolate, plain or vanilla. Feel free to skip the peanut butter glaze if you’re feeling something simpler. Note that these doughnuts are incredibly tender and, as a result, quite delicate! Exercise caution when removing them from the doughnut pan.

Paleo Blueberry Doughnuts

These beautiful Paleo doughnuts taste remarkably similar to the standard blueberry cake doughnut. Heart-healthy blueberries burst with fiber, while creamy yogurt adds an extra boost of protein. This recipe also includes an optional raspberry glaze that adds the perfect touch of tartness.

Vegan Maple Doughnuts

Crunchy yet tender, these doughnuts scream (the good kind of) “old-fashioned.” They take approximately 45 minutes to bake, so be patient (they're worth the wait!). They need to get fully brown, and a toothpick or knife needs to come out clean.

Once done, you’ll sprinkle on a light layer of cinnamon sugar — use coconut sugar for a healthier alternative to cane sugar. Cinnamon helps reduce blood sugar, so you don’t need to feel too guilty about this sweet treat. High-fiber flaxseed meal replaces eggs in this recipe, while a dash of cider vinegar reacts with baking soda to create fluffiness.
