Uric acid is a compound produced by the body from purine, a compound found in food. Uric acid is necessary for cell function and is an antioxidant. Excess uric acid is typically flushed out through the kidneys and is excreted in urine. However, levels higher than those that can be eliminated sometimes form sharp little crystals around the joints. These crystals irritate the surrounding tissue, which becomes swollen and painful. This is called gout. Besides a diet low in purine and medication, flushing out excess uric acid is the best way to prevent gout. You can use water to help do this.
Enhance the effectiveness of uric acid inhibitors by drinking water to flush away the by-products of these drugs.
Prevent dehydration, which triggers uric acid increases and gout attacks, by drinking plenty of water. Drinking lots of water dilutes the amount of uric acid in the body.
Drink 12 eight ounce glasses of water a day for use as a remedy for high uric acid levels. You may need to increase that in hot weather or if you exercise heavily.
Treat water like a medicine. Take a dose (a glass) at set periods like you would a pill if it helps you to remember.
Sipping throughout the day may also be helpful for meeting your need. If you have trouble drinking plain water, adding a very small amount of fruit juice or a squeeze of lemon or lime gives the water flavor without taking away from the benefits of pure water.
If you absolutely can’t drink that much water, then drink as much as you can while substituting other non-diuretic beverages for a few glasses of it. Diuretic beverages include coffee, caffeinated tea, caffeinated soda and alcoholic beverages.
Drinking lots of water and eating a low purine diet has been shown to be effective for preventing kidney stones as well.
