Gout is a painful form of arthritis that occurs when uric acid levels become too high, according to WebMD. This occurs because the liver produces more uric acid than the body is able to secrete. Over time the excessive amounts of uric acid levels in the blood can begin to form gout crystals, which settle in the joints of the body and can be extremely painful. Removing gout crystals can be accomplished at home.
Drink approximately 50% of your total body weight in ounces of water during the day. For instance, a person weighing 200 pounds would drink approximately 100 ounces of water. According to the Podiatry Channel, this can help reduce the amount of gout crystals in the body.
Avoid drinking alcohol, which can elevate the levels of uric acid in the body, causing the gout crystals to become worse.
Consume unsweetened cherries. According to the Podiatry Channel, eating fresh, frozen or canned unsweetened cherries can lower levels of uric acid in the bloodstream.
Avoid eating excessive amounts of fish, meat and poultry during a gout attack. According to the Mayo Clinic, daily intake of these foods should be limited to four to six ounces.
Speak to your doctor about medications that can help remove uric acid from the blood. These medications, such as Probalan, can only be prescribed by a doctor and may cause side effects such as stomach pain and rash, according to the Mayo Clinic.
