These hand and finger positions are designed to allow a flow of the body's energy in specific patterns that support the meditation mantra. The mudras are a nonverbal mode of communication consisting of hand gestures and finger postures. In the practice of yoga, mudras invoke divine power in the mind.

Prithvi Mudra is performed when the tip of the ring finger touches the tip of the thumb, with the other three fingers stretched out. To practice Surya Mudra, touch the third (ring) finger to the pad of thumb. Press the thumb gently over this third (ring) finger. Keep the other fingers straight and apart.
