According to the FDA warning, they tested samples of weight loss aids including lida daidaihua and found many to be contaminated with ingredients not listed on the label. Lida was found to contain sibutramine, available by prescription only in the U.S. Sibutramine, also called Meridia is a schedule IV controlled substance. It was found that if consumers took the recommended dose of lida daidaihua they would be taking three times the recommended dose of sibutramine.The FDA reports that even at correct dosing sibutramine is contraindicated for people who have high blood pressure, heart or circulation problems, glaucoma, seizures and liver dysfunction. Sibutramine also reacts with many other drugs.

Even if lida daidaihua contains only what is listed on the label, there are problems with the main ingredient. According to The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, bitter orange oil comes from trees grown in the Mediterranean and the U.S. Bitter orange is touted for its health benefits but there is no research to back up the claims. Bitter orange contains synephrine, a drug similar to the banned drug ephedra. There is no research on the safety of synephrine but it has been associated with heart attack and stroke in healthy people.
