Humidifiers Vs. Vaporizers

By Melissa Lindberg

For someone who suffers from allergies, nosebleeds or cold symptoms, using a vaporizer or humidifier could provide the relief you seek. Dry nasal passages and congestion are common symptoms relieved by using one of these two machines. For many, the question of whether to use steam or a cool mist is often confusing. To make the best decision for your personal health needs, it is best to evaluate the benefits and deficits of both models before you make your final decision.

Significance

Humidifiers and vaporizers both increase the moisture in the air, which decreases dryness and improves congestion and other symptoms related to colds and allergies.

Differences

A humidifier offers a soothing cool mist which is often easier for people to tolerate. Humidifiers are often noisy, are known to put particles into the air and need to be cleaned often in order to prevent the accumulation of mold. For individuals who have mold allergies, this is a constant concern to prevent further irritating their congestion.

A vaporizer releases hot steam into the air, does not put particles into the air and does not need constant cleaning to prevent mold buildup. Due to the fact that the vaporizer actually boils the water, there is less possibility of the buildup of bacteria and mold. With a vaporizer, it is possible to add medications such as Vicks VapoRub to ease breathing; often these medications can reduce discomfort of cold symptoms.

Benefits

Humidifiers and vaporizers are both beneficial in relieving sinus and nasal congestion due to colds or allergies. Dryness in the air causes the nasal passages to become dry, and using a vaporizer or humidifier adds moisture to the air and alleviates the dryness. Moisture in the air helps to reduce nasal dryness, prevents bacteria from adhering to nasal passages and makes coughing more productive.

Considerations

If you are shopping for something to add moisture to the air in your home, your decision to purchase a humidifier or a vaporizer is generally going to be based upon personal preference. Both machines create moisture and offer relief from dry nasal passages; it is up to the consumer as to whether it should be a cool mist or a warm steam.

Warnings

A vaporizer is often very beneficial to someone who is congested and suffering from a cold. However, extensive care must be taken when in operation as the hot water and steam that is emitted from the machine can be very hot and can burn if the vaporizer is overturned or someone gets too close to the machine.
